About this game

Bridge Builder Physics leaves out the one thing most bridge games give you: joints. Nothing you place is attached to anything else. Every plank is a rigid body held up by contact, friction and whatever is beneath it, which means the structure has to genuinely support itself before it can support anything else.

The cart adds a moving load. A span that sits perfectly still while empty can still fail halfway across, because the load path shifts as the cart moves. Building for the empty case is the most common reason a run ends.

How to play

  1. Tap or click to place a plank. Use Q and E to rotate it before placing.
  2. Planks fall and settle like any other object. Overlap them onto the banks and onto each other.
  3. You have a limited number of planks per span, shown in the HUD.
  4. Press Enter to release the cart. It rolls from the left bank towards the right.
  5. If the cart reaches the far bank, the span is complete. If it falls, the run ends.

Physics mechanics

Here is what the simulation is actually doing while you play.

Load paths

A structure stands when the weight it carries reaches the ground through a continuous chain of contacts. A plank supported at only one end has no complete path, so it rotates about its support and drops.

Friction at every contact

Planks do not slide off each other because friction resists the sideways component of the load. Once a plank is steep enough, friction is no longer enough and the whole arrangement slips at once.

Moving loads

The cart's weight acts at whatever point it currently occupies. As it crosses, the bending moment on the span changes, which is why the midpoint of a long unsupported deck is where failures happen.

Objective

Get the cart from the left bank to the right bank across a structure you built.

Scoring

  • Completing a span awards 500 points.
  • Every unused plank is worth 200 points, so efficient designs score far higher.
  • A time bonus decays at 40 points per second of the cart's crossing.

Scores, favourites and play history are stored in your own browser using localStorage. There is no account, no leaderboard and no server: clearing your browser data clears them, and they do not follow you to another device.

Tips

  1. Overlap generously. A plank resting with only a centimetre on each support will pivot. Aim for at least a third of its length on solid ground.
  2. Build from the banks inward. Start each end anchored on the bank, then bridge the remaining gap. A span built from the middle out has nothing to stand on.
  3. Use rotation for props. A plank rotated to lean against a bank or pillar acts as a brace and stops the deck sliding sideways under load.
  4. Flatter is faster. The cart is driven forward but a steep deck still stalls it. A near-level surface crosses in half the time and earns more of the time bonus.
  5. Save planks deliberately. Each unused plank is worth 200 points — more than the time bonus of a typical crossing. A minimal working bridge outscores an over-built one.

Difficulty

Hard. The first two spans include support pillars and are straightforward. From span four onward there are no pillars at all, and a plank-only span across the full gap requires genuinely thinking about where the load goes.

Features

  • Planks held up by contact and friction only — nothing is glued
  • Six spans with fewer support pillars each time
  • Rotatable planks for ramps and props
  • Moving load that can break a bridge that held while empty
  • Plank budget with a bonus for unused pieces

How accurate is this?

Physics Arcade games use simplified, tuned physics built for playability. They are not scientific simulations: forces, masses and timings are chosen because they feel good at 60 frames per second, not because they match measured values. Where a game departs from real-world behaviour in a way that matters, the game page says so.

Bridge Builder Physics – FAQ

Why do my planks fall as soon as I place them?

They are ordinary physics bodies with no joints. A plank needs something under it at both ends, or at least enough overlap on one support that its centre of mass stays over it.

Can I remove a plank I have placed?

Not directly. Planks settle where they fall. If a placement goes badly, the practical options are to build around it or restart the span.

Why does the cart stop partway?

The cart is driven, but a steep or broken deck can stall it. If it has not reached the far bank within 18 seconds the attempt ends.

Does plank rotation affect strength?

It affects geometry, which affects strength. A rotated plank makes a ramp or a brace; the material properties are identical.
